Reflection as a Studying Artist
Scheemda - 4th Year Exhibition
I visited the Graduation Show in Scheemda and I learned a few things that I thought I could include into my own art making practice. As a person, I personally love to write and as well as do art. Therefore, from my inspiration of the exhibition, I thought why not incorporate writing in some way into my art making practice? Or should I do writing as a personal project rather than doing it as part of art? Would it help improve the expressivity of my themes as I wanted it to be significantly influential? That is something I need to search about...
I was also fascinated by how people are also creating such amazing artworks and as well as allowing viewers to also be invited to be a part of an artwork. Along with this, there were a few artworks where they created a cultural environment allowing viewers to feel a part of each culture and this gave me perspective on how I could do the same if I were to continue exploring Indian Culture.
The show also gave me perspective on how to express my artworks in which way and the presentation of the exhibition within a given space. I could make it into a room full of art? Or as simply a display?

Making my 3D Art History Model
Here is the video of how it looks: https://youtube.com/shorts/4Woj6K_k1oo?feature=share Art-O-(S)tiles is a 3D Art World which consists of most of the common art movements ranging from the Renaissance to American Abstract Expressionism along with their sub groups such as Pop art, De Stijl, Art Deco, Minimalism, der Blaue Reiter, die Brücke, and so on, that were influenced by them. I wanted to create a project that would be fun, educational, and unique for us to experience. I created a game where a person would have to pick out a purple chit that included a brief description of the major styles (the tiles) and can learn about what defines that movement and how can we recognize it as that movement. Additionally, they would pick out a chit from the pink/blue box that consists of a description of the connections or contradictions between two or more styles. Once they pick out the chit, the color would correspond with the yarn presented and the number that is displayed on the styles. Hence, this becomes a scavenger hunt to discover the relationships between the different styles and which styles reject which. What inspired me to do this is because art is a huge map itself. As artists, we tend to mix, match, and reject different techniques, concepts, even with the influence of the cultural context we are in, without even knowing that we are creating a whole new art world.

Going to The Excursion Trip + Rajasthani Textiles
As part of the excursion trip, we went to the CODA museum to see the digital art point of view on art. I found it interesting but at the same time a bit challenging. I personally do not favor digital art as much as I am more of a technical and physical artist. However, I did find this experience interesting as I could see how I could incorporate a few inspirations that I saw in the digital art world into my own art practice. I also got the inspiration from the fabric workshop where I saw how people were creating clothing using random fabric and creating a patchwork. Hence I got inspired to do the same and incorporate it into my own art practice as well as seeing how one artist was exploring her own culture of the Africa. I decided to try and do the same for my own culture where I explore India and its crucial use of textiles.
Growing up I always have collected fabric from a local tailor in India and had them piling up. Textiles are part of every aspect of India’s identity through religion, culture, clothing, as well as cotton being the most popular production in India. I have been fascinated at how Indian clothing are so eye-catching and so commonly used everywhere I go in India. I decided to explore further into it. Furthermore, I decided to incorporate different color fabrics specifically to indian culture and create a sensory experience of Rajasthani culture which is one of the most important places in India that fascinates me through their strong cultural identity and its ability to keep the Indian culture alive to this day. Going beyond from the previous artwork of creating a sensory experience by renewing old photos, I wanted to engage the viewers to go through this sensory experience into the culture and get a feel of how colorful and religious Rajasthani culture is. I realized that I am incorporating the main characteristic of capturing sensory experiences of impressionism.
As per my research into Rajasthani culture, a piece of information came up that confirms my understanding that textiles are so crucial, is that Rajasthan is famous for its textiles and handicrafts in its various traditional and colorful ways. Furthermore, its culture is known to be famous for its historical forts and palaces and its rich cultural heritage and architectural marvels. It is also famous for its cultural clothing and tribal people. This information inspired me to create this piece of incorporating Rajasthani architecture, people, colors, and its sensory experiences.
As I made this piece, I experimented with technicalities I absorbed from creating the collage piece from last semester and incorporated different colors that may not be related to each other but can express Rajasthani culture through its composition and elements. I also got inspired by how artists who created similar pieces like these incorporated visible yarn to create a textural feel and bring a pop of color in the artwork.
This process has allowed me to think beyond in what can i achieve from textiles and go beyond into the context of a piece. Simply from researching through the context into my fascination of embroidery into Indian culture and how I can learn about my culture through art and its sensory experiences. It allowed me to critically observe the world around me and creatively incorporate this into a unique experience for the viewer.

Screen Printing
Today was the first screen printing class, but in a different way. I have tried screen printing before and have loved it. But this time, due to a lack of time, we decided to explore stencil printing. When the teacher explained where she got the idea from especially during covid where they had no ability to use the actual art materials. I was finding it interesting. They used stencils and random materials such as shoe polish or acrylic paint as the ink with brushes from around the house to create random designs on the paper. This experience has allowed me to understand how to be free and trust my gut to make designs or patterns that would create a unique artwork out of it.

Studying Art History
I have always loved learning about history and how people at the time creating art and lived in a different atmosphere. Whenever I visit a historical place, I always somehow feel connected to it. Therefore I was excited to learn about various art movements of the time. As I started learning about it, I realized that there was so much at the time that artists went through in terms of creating art and always experimenting with various techniques from other movements. I also realized that there is so much to each movement than I imagined. I created mindmaps and saw how different things are so interrelated and also rejected from each other to come all the way to contemporary art now. This allowed me to start brainstorming what I could do to make a model to show the relationships between the movements as part of the art history assignment...

Printmaking Class
Using the inspiration I derived from the 3rd Year Expo, I included this process book into my practice. I first started off with creating a mindmap on what is the outcome of shared space of storytelling and its research. I realized how much I have learned as I went along as it gave me insights into key words or information that would be helpful as the starting point of my first experimentation. Even with the background experience in IB art and making a process portfolio, this process has always helped me but I understood how only now. I knew I wanted to continue doing this for a lot of my projects in the future. I showed my brainstorming work to my printmaking class teacher, and he said that this is a great strategy to develop your ideas and starting points to my experimentation.

Observing How 3rd Year Students Did it...
Today I decided to go to the 3rd Year Expo and see how they have accomplished their process for art and created ideas along the way. There was a sketchbook I saw in which gave me a whole idea of how to create process along the way and criticise your work as you go bigger and expand your art. I like how she first brainstorms about her topic through research and reference photos and then derived her inspiration from her research. She also gets fascinated with various materials that may or may not be used in the art world and try to make a beautiful piece of work with it. When I saw this, I could see how we both relate so much in terms of what we do and how we do art. Seeing this happen in another person's art practice gives me reassurance about how it can help me expand my horizon.

Visitng Galleries
As an artist myself, my perception of art has been primarily through visiting museums that represent art from different movements and styles. However, it is important to visit art galleries to see how other artists, including current local and famous artists, go about in their professional practice. The first gallery I visited was the WEP gallery as a group with my classmates, in which we were presented with a lively exhibition created by artists Tanja Isbarn and Lola Diaz Cantoni. This exhibition was about exploring the fascinations of how to contribute as a visitor and bring our memories and experiences connected to food.
As soon as I entered, I was given a rice paper sheet with words and I got to “taste my thinking” which fascinated me as it gave me a chance to connect my own memories and personal journey with food. This experience was enhanced with the use of experimenting with dough of different colors. This taught me how to connect with other people through food, express memories, be creative, and create connections with each other. As I would say: “To build bridges you need to break Bread”
Another gallery I visited by myself was the ArtisBook which presented an exhibition created by Hamish Fulton who is a walking artist. At the start, I was very confused about how he uses art in walking experiences. As I went along and interacted with him, he was trying to express that when stuck in a studio, your own mind is controlled by the atmosphere, however, as you go for a walk, there is a stimulation of your creativity. Hamish expresses these ideas and thoughts he experiences in walking in his photography and writing. Additionally, I also tried to understand his approach in art through a demonstration where we had to walk about 100 meters very slowly for 1 and a half hours and experience our thoughts being expressed. Despite that I got a few interesting statements in his work, this experience to me was limiting and a little frustrating. However, I learned that every artist has his or her own way of finding creativity. What works for some, may not work for everybody.
Overall, I enjoyed experiencing the first exhibition because food and art are my favorites. It allowed me to experience how talking about food can connect and help converse with people. Additionally, I learned that coming to an exhibition with other people can give you different perspectives through interaction and conversation. However, even with this experience, I can easily say that, there are some exhibitions where you want to experience the journey of the artist by yourself whereas there are places where you would understand it better with other people. Finally I can say that these visits made me understand other points of view and experience of other people.

Going back to Tribal India
One of my fascinations lie in my Indian culture and I have always wanted to create artworks about or from India. Therefore, I used my opportunity to ask questions and experiment with various ideals that I research about my culture. As I started off with cardboard clay, I realize that this could be the start of my journey to learn about Indian art as I learned that cardboard or natural waste would be used to create clay in the villages. Therefore, I used this opportunity to expand on this and create artworks that fascinated me from my culture.18th May 2023
Incorporating Daily Feelings into Collage
As part of my daily anything and fascinations with collage and color, I decided to incorporate my daily feelings into my collage where I make a strip of textured paper per day. Each day I learn to let go and express how I am feeling through the use of shapes and color. This would allow me to learn to experiment and let go as well as see what I find fascinating. This would also allow me to get inspired for my other work.

Confirmation Conversation with my Teacher
After doing my process and art making practice, I decided to show what I have been doing with my teacher and express my process. The feedback I gained was a eye opening as it made me realize that what I have been doing is considered as process and thinking beyond. This is what I was doing the whole time:- Finding your process - reflecting on your technique, reflecting on your work, there is no right or wrong, express your process of thinking into your book
- Brainstorm on a single word - mindmap and ask questions (what can I do with this word, what can i make out of it, why is this word important, how can i express it)
- Make artworks as a response to these questions and ask more questions to it, and then keep making work or if you like a certain thing, expand on it
- Even if it stops at a certain point, it may start another project.

A good question to ask about your work...
As an artist, i have struggled with finding themes or materials I like to often use. However, when joining a professional practice workshop hosted by Layla May Arthur who is a paper cut artist, I learned about a strategy to see how I fit in and where I fit in when it comes to experimenting and figuring out what works best to express my art at its maximum. "What is the common trend that connects all your work - both technique and idea wise - and then research into those techniques specifically and expand.

Making Mindmaps
After gaining feedback from my peers and reading about experimentation. I decided to try and continue to make mindmaps in both my head and on paper in such a way that I pick out a random topic I find interesting and brainstorm by asking questions to it. My questions would typically be, "what else can I make out of it? What are some other potential meanings of the topic? Could I explore this symbolically or literally? Was this worth the try? Did I gain something out of this? I found this to be helpful as a way to explore information you have never been to before as well as expand my horizon on art.

Articles on Experimenting
Exploration — “Now I’ve used this hammer for years making chairs, what else can I make with it?”
Expansion — “Now I’ve made tables, cabinets, chairs of course, and a dog house. What if I were to do variations on these, change things up from how they’ve been done before?”
Manifestation — “I’ve always had this vision, hard to describe because its never been seen- but I’ll do my best to build it, and then I’ll find out if I was right about it.”
Transition — “I know a lot about hammers and nails but not much about brushes and canvases, what would emerge if I tested these things out?”
Revelation — “What would happen if I were to set out with no course at all, just like in the very beginning, and see if I can stumble on something neither I nor anyone else could have anticipated? I will meander, I will see what falls out in the process, I will make myself an open gate with no intention for a while.”

Conversation with All My Teachers Again
- Just make art without thinking, be free, make art on how you feel within, not look at others example, if you can't start, do a sketchbook of work and make and make and see what surprised you. Don't make art to please us, there are no wrong, no mistakes, just work.
- Transfer from one medium to another by going beyond and digging deeper into a theme or concept you are focusing on.

Review Feedback
Wow what a day! On Tuesday I did my midterm review. You may see amazing work as expectation, but the reality behind it was tonnes of anxiety, tears, and stress. The past two months I have been having lots of stress and anxiety, yet I pushed myself to get the results I can. I was facing an artist block but I experimented with various ideas in the mean time while I try to learn to not be stressed. I received such amazing feedback saying that I’m an ambitious artist who has perfect attendance. My work is as usual amazing, but there is one idea that they told me that is an answer I have been looking for. Like I said, I am facing an artist block, not only because of my stress but also having lack of ideas and inspiration. They said something that I needed to hear, “go wilder, go bigger, go beyond”. At first I was annoyed because that is a challenging concept to accomplish, however it made sense as I looked into my work. It looks good small and detailed. But I need to go beyond! Now how? That is something I need to search…

Seeing the Benefit of Working in the Studio
Last semester, I mostly worked in my room at the hostel rather than at the studio for a few reasons. I felt that the studio was too messy for me to create art as well as I could work on my work at my own pace. However, as I did the same this semester, I felt the feelings of boredom and lack of excitement in my work. Therefore, I decided to try and work in the studio this time. I could feel the change of atmosphere has impacted me in a way that it has pushed me to get to work.

Updating my PDP (Personal Development Plan)
The past few weeks, it has been a challenge to come up with ideas for my next pieces and trying to figure out how I can progress further. Therefore, I needed to update my PDP to try and figure out a solid plan for what I want to achieve in this semester. I could see how this update has created a specific yet open- minded plan to guide me to achieve the goals and gain back my creativity into action. The classes I had last semester were the ones that helped me get there at the most as compared to the one I am having now. However, this gives me the challenge to try create ideas outside of these classes.

Website Creating
This blog has been there since 2011 with the aim to document what I experience during my journey as a hearing impaired person. However, as I started doing art at minerva, I realise that it needed an update. As part of professional practices, I learned the significance in trying to promote what you do as an artist and as a person. Therefore, I decided to upgrade my blog into a website that consisted of different pages such as art portfolio, speeches, dance performances, as well as my reflections as a studying artist. During this challenging experience, I learned how to be considerate by using the features around you rather than looking for an advanced website creator and create an amazing website. I also learned the significance of sharing with others what you do as a person and a student so that they can learn from you.

Transforming Film Into Hard Copies
After finishing the film development, the next step was to print copies of the films. I was very excited to learn about how to develop these photographs, and how long does it take to be soaked in different kinds of chemicals. As a result, I can see how significant photography like these are in trying to create an impact in this world. Additionally, the use of the strong values, contrast shields, and the timer in achieving the level of contrast that you would want as a print helps increase clarity, and create an impact on the audience. Despite that this was not based on a theme, I wanted to experiment with the techniques rather than focusing on what I want the photographs to be about. I liked how these images can be powerful to the audience.

Creating A Contemporary Dance Out of the Poem
As I finished writing my poem, my brain was spiralling with creativity and new ideas that I could do. I decided to do a contemporary video as my first piece as dance is something that I am also passionate about. It was a challenging experience as I had to create this video all by myself with no help. Therefore, I looked around me and experimented with various dance steps and editing techniques to see how I can make a powerful and impactful video about positivity and change. I learned all about different apps and trying to research which app would give the best result possible. Additionally, I learned about various techniques, animations, and transitions that would help me create a powerful video.

Amsterdam Excursion
This was my first solo trip that I have done. As a group of a few students from my class and other classes, we went to Amsterdam to see various museums. First we started off with going to the Oude Church and I did not see anything that would inspire me in my work. However, as part of the church itself, I saw the stained windows that ancient people did which gave me some pointers into how I would like to create my next project which is made out of glass. Then I decided to go and see the Stedelijk museum which is the right choice for me as it consists of contemporary art and historic art that would help me get inspired for my next pieces. I acquired a lot of knowledge on different techniques, movements, and different mediums that I could potentially use. Additionally, it gave me insight into how the artist created these themes in various ways and why they did what they did. Lastly, I went to the studio of my teachers and something caught my eye. I saw a gallery of an old woman's artwork and her techniques caught my eye as it consists of bright, colorful, not too abstract strokes and themes. I was particularly intrigued how she experimented with various techniques to see where her ideas are expressed at the maximum. This gave me a potential idea to do the same in my sketchbook and experiment with various techniques, compositions, and much more. Additionally, I got the idea of how to observe the surroundings, study them, and draw them. This trip allowed me to understand the importance of independency and learning the different experiences of different artists.

Creating a Poem on a Photo That is Not Yours
I have always been inspired by my mother who is a poet and for my assignment at school, I had to choose a random photograph from the photography class and create a short story/ description/ paragraph on that photo. I decided to do a poem. It was inspired by my experience as a girl growing into the world with full of issues and struggles. I wanted to raise awareness about positivity and trying to live life to the fullest. It was a fun and challenging experience trying to come up with words that would fit each other. It allowed me to be creative with my words and create a powerful verbal piece that would be useful in creating artworks. This process has given me the chance to create ideas for my next pieces such as a painting, or collage, or a contemporary dance. Additionally, using the language that I have developed from my speech therapy moments by my mother and mentor, I was able to create this poem.

Nikon Photography
When I was younger, I saw a box full of tapes and films that were in procession from my parents generation. I was fascinated by how these images were portrayed on the films. Today, I was able to learn how to use these cameras and take photos manually. It was a complicated procedure as I needed to make sure that the photographic triangle was considered and was balanced to take a good photo. I experimented various strategies in trying to capture movement, and play with light sensitivity in the images. It was challenging to see whether the images came out well as it did not have that ability to see images on the camera like a digital one was able to do. I liked how powerful the clarity and depth the images had as it created an impact in expressing the images in a very concise way.

Connections Between Artworks of Various Eras
Art has come a long way from cave paintings to contemporary art, and there are often connections between the different eras, movements, and these developed logical findings why art has developed in such a way that has influenced the society each time. Today, as a class in Studio classroom with 1A, we worked together to analyse connections and contrasts between different artworks from different eras and context. I was able to experience how artworks that are loosely related can have a connection with others in even small ways. Furthermore, these connections can be deepened when continuing to search for more similarities and differences creating an understanding of the human mind and creativity. It is still difficult for me to understand however, in the future I would like to develop this maybe when analysing movements as we studied movements in theory to see what is the relationship between each and how did the human mind and creativity create these for what reason.

First Arduino Experience
Art is a means of expressing creativity as it is "the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination" into a piece. I have grown up not really liking digital art, or installation as much especially with the exhibitions I have seen. Today, I was introduced into the medium of Arduino which is a hardware and software that reads inputs such as light on a sensor and finger on a button and turn it into an output like a motor or turning on a LED. It was an interesting experience, however, despite that I have a few ideas that I could use to create a project, I do not see myself using this medium into my art in the future. I did not see it as something that would help me express my themes specifically as much as other media I am using.

Pinhole Photography
Growing up, I have always been fascinated by historical methods of photography. Today, I had the chance to be able to understand how people did pinhole photography. It was a complex yet simple procedure. I learned the importance of the photographic triangle consisting of aperture, ISO, and shutter speed. Aperture is the size of the lens opening - the smaller the lens - the deeper the depth of the field as less light , the wider the aperture, the shallower the depth of the field. ISO is the light sensitivity - the higher the sensitivity, more light and more noise would exist, the lower the sensitivity, there would be less light and less noise would exist. Lastly, shutter speed is the exposure time in seconds - the faster the exposure time, there would be a clearer motion, the slower the exposure time, there would be a blur motion. To create a balance in these features is quite tricky, as well as ensuring that the the exposure time to the image that the box is trying to capture would be perfect to ensure a good picture. However, it was a good and something that is exciting to experience for future generations like me.

Art History Class
Why do people reject art history and only focus on art on activism and awareness, why not both? Growing up, I was in a very classical and academic education and have beliefs in classical art as well as art history. Hence, I was not in favor of the art world now where art is mostly abstract and contemporary. However, as I came to Minerva, I saw that I am now exploring contemporary and abstract art and can see how it can be very useful in trying to express themes that impact you. Therefore, I started implementing the techniques and experiments into my work. This brings me to the point that I had in mind that why do people not keep art history as a tool to help us learn how to create art as well as combine it with techniques we learn from contemporary art. I was sitting in the theory class learning about art history, and I felt like all this knowledge is fading away. I may be wrong but this is what I thought about today.

Workshop at FIS
One of my aims is to become a potential art teacher in the future. Growing up, I was surrounded with 3 best art teachers, my mom - my entire life, Mr G since middle school, and Ms J since elementary school, whom I still contact with today, and they have inspired me to become an art teacher like them. During my ski break, I was offered the opportunity to do a workshop with the 4th graders at my school for an entire week about how I express my personal journey in my art as part of their new art unit. I was at first very nervous, however, I knew that this is what I want to do in the future. It made me experience how to become an art teacher, and it has allowed me to understand the significance of self expression, experimenting, and freedom in terms of how art does not need to be perfect. I was showing them one of my artworks which had a proportion error, what shocked me is that they did not notice it unless I told them. This helped me realise that there is no such thing as bad art, every person has their own interpretations about your work. I also asked the kids to write some feedback on my workshop, and they all said that I had made an impact on their ability to create art and it has made me understand the importance of being a teacher.
This helped create connections to what I learned in professional practices about networking and understanding how to promote your practice in many places.

Visit to the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt
As I entered the exhibition with a whole new perspective of art, I was experiencing confusion and curiosity about what I am seeing around. As a whole, I was engrossed by the use of colors, and a whole new style of art. The whole exhibition was bright with pink and blue walls creating a lively atmosphere for me as I view the work. The work of Saint Phalle was presented in a progressive manner from her first stage of art, all the way to her last stage which has become her most popular work around the world. I felt a sense of similarity in our progress as well as our purpose in creating art. In other words, as I read descriptions about her work, I could see that she documents her journey as a woman who faces relationship issues and criticises the viewpoint of women in society. However, despite that my journey is completely different in terms of my experience as a deaf person, the whole idea of expressing our self-journey through experimenting with various media (“played with themes, techniques, working approaches, and employed a broad artistic spectrum”) and her thought process is commonly found in both her and my work. Therefore, I was able to follow along her journey of life and how she expresses each moment and criticises her journey and the society around her.
Nevertheless, I still had some puzzling questions after seeing this work, even though I am viewing it as a studying artist rather than a common audience. Furthermore, I was curious about why the artist used doll heads, spiders, hairy creatures, and other odd objects in her assemblages, why not make it more obvious or what is the purpose of using these materials and how does it enhance the expressivity of the theme. But a statement I had read the second time on the description stated that “creating art is more a means of expression, it is a personal necessity”, “art as happening and performance”, as well as art can be “playing with mass” - in other words, meaning doesn’t have to be all physical.
